Cannot run win98-quickinstall in DosBox-X

• (If the issue occurs AFTER or DURING Windows 9x's hardware detection phase) I have tried to install with Skip legacy non-PnP hardware detection phase to [OFF] and the issue still occurs.
• (If the issue occurs AFTER or DURING Windows 9x's hardware detection phase) I have tried to install with the integrated driver library set to [OFF] and the issue still occurs.
• I understand that support is provided voluntarily for free, and that the author is not Microsoft and can/will probably not fix bugs in the operating system code itself. I also understand that it is impossible to support every single hardware combination out there.

What happened?

When I try mounting win98qi_v1.0.1a_ALL.iso as drive D:, changing from drive Z: to D:, running INSTALL & selecting A, in DosBox-X, it'll cause DosBox-X to reboot.

Dosbox is really very much not the intended target for this stuff, and if it cannot run a Linux kernel, perhaps it's better to open a bug ticket with them rather than me... You can try booting the image directly: IMGMOUNT D <iso file> IMGMOUNT A -bootcd D BOOT A: If that doesn't work then tough luck, sorry :)

I was able to install Win98qi version 0.9.4 with Dosbox-x version 2026.08.02 (latest from FlatHub). Basically I've followed their official guide from here.

I only had an issue with first boot. It was the same thing as you describe, the dosbox-x was shutting down after some time of black screen. This issue persisted until I've run win98 in safe mode, then rebooted to "normal" and somehow it started to work.
