I am considering adding Special:RecentChanges to the default list of blocked special pages in version 1.7.0. The reason is due to an uptick in observed bot traffic to Special:RecentChanges on MyWikis wikis. I'm assuming other wikis are observing similar patterns. This would be a more disruptive change, but may be necessary should the current trend continue. I should note that MyWikis already blocks Special:RecentChanges using CrawlerProtection.
Thoughts are welcome from the community on whether this is necessary or if it would be too disruptive.
