hi,
Despite I use Geany all the time, I also use Xed, all the time (while in Geany I have many files open, in Xed I'll have a few).
I really like Xed. I've been using it for years...
Suggestion #1:
To be able to save a copy is a very good thing. It is hard to explain, if possible at all. But who expects you to give a reason to all functionalities of VIM, for example? People who use it just want it that way :)
To save a copy: it is a quick thing. You're not sure how your changes (from the given point) will come out, but you have a "vision", and you want to go for it, and you start typing... but what you have is good already, so..
you want to save a copy :)
With Geany this will never happen (in this universe instance, at least :))
The dynamism within the developers' group have long passed that point when they could have said: sure, why not?
It is mature... no space for dealing with stylistic subtleties that is due at a young-age.
Saving a copy is a good thing, that's all I can say.
Libreoffice has it :)
Plus, the fact that Geany and Sublime (who is semi-commercial) don't have it doesn't mean that Xed needs to fall in line with them, in the programmer editors' league :)
side NOTE:
Xed's plugin implementation (the concept and the pratice) is extremely refreshing!!! intelligent and clear-cut
suggestion #2
I know, if you want your document's lines right-stripped, you can set saving to include stripping...
But that also comes with erasing the bottom of your document that only has a few empty lines...
which means a forced scroll, in reality...
Sure, one can adapt... and stop hitting ctrl+s when there are new lines at the bottom...
plus one can learn to have an underscore of a hash or what not at the bottom if one wants
that extra space -- that is to be filled with code / text in the near future -- empty / free / available... "ahead"...
Which is like have switched the reflector in a car on so you'll see the road ahead...
Either way... to have a save trailing spaces function as a menu item.... is good...
I'm not saying it's necessary for everyone from Mumbai to Vancouver and back...
But I know that I'd love to have it...
Perhaps the plugin could be extended!
If I was more experienced in this field, I'd try to do that... Maybe I will... but I'm sure that an actual programmer can do it better :)
#3: the margin and word wrapping
First of all, a margin is a great thing...
with wide screen having te document area at the left side is not good..
I work with "4:3" (5:4) screens, and it is not good, either...
So, I'll always turn on the sidebar :) on the left...
and set up some margin...
It would be great if the lines would break at the margin... not at the display's right "wall"...
+ something else:
The help menu is incredibly GREAT!
I never use the help of programs anymore... I guess, this is the trend... getting help online, especially with open source applications, is a more natural approach...
But your help menu is stunning!!
#5 okay, +1, toggle dark theme / change theme
I think it would be great if the themes could be changed from the view menu
and the dark / light mode toggled by a short key (?)
side NOTE:
the short keys in the short keys page are very well arranged!
* * * * * thank you for developing Xed :) * * * * *
