How to make it only return in case of error? (instead of exit)

I'm trying to use getoptions in shell functions I source without spawning subshells.
Maybe I'm missing sth obvious (still learning shell scripting),
but I can't configure it to just return error code in case of errors.
It always call exit and leaves whole shell.

If you use library option, you could just change all instances of exit to return and adjust your function

parser_definition() {
	setup   REST help:usage -- "Usage: mkcd [mkdir-options]... <directory>" ''
	disp    :usage  -h --help
	disp    VERSION    --version
}

# Parse options
eval "$(getoptions parser_definition parse)"
if parse "$@"; then
	:
else
	return $?
fi
eval "set -- $REST"

@ko1nksm would be nice to consider a setup setting to decide whether it should exit or not

setup - return:true
# or
setup - return:false # default behavior

or even more semantic

setup - flow:return
# or
setup - flow:exit # default behavior
