A big thank you for OpenFreeMap, it is a wonderful resource! I have found the project to be both informative and inspirational.
I am an outdoor enthusiast and wanted to learn more about the technologies involved in creating a style tailored for the outdoors, all powered by Free and Open-Source data. I have assembled these learnings into a new MapLibre style called Outdoors.
Instead of starting from scratch, I used the OFM fork of OSM Liberty to see how far I could push the existing data available in the OpenMapTiles schema.
Outdoor-related POIs and paths are promoted, while the road networks and city infrastructure are dialed down. Mapterhorn DEM is used for hillshading and terrain.
To complement the available data, I set up a tile server which serves planet-wide outdoor-related POIs and low-zoom paths, extracted from OpenStreetMap using Planetiler. The tile server also runs a contour service that uses maplibre-contour to provide on-demand vector contour lines (also using the Mapterhorn DEM).
It's just a proof of concept for now and definitely rough around the edges. I have also documented my findings.
Currently the style points to the OFM tiles.openfreemap.org endpoint, which I am not sure you allow. My hope, with your permission, is to use the OFM instance to bootstrap the project, get initial feedback and make improvements. Perhaps once it is more mature it could become an officially supported style?
I can of course expedite self-hosting my own OFM instance if you would prefer.
