Plain-language definitions of the less-common terms used in the report and its source notes — the git-trailer mechanics, open-source governance instruments, software-provenance specs, and copyright case law behind the credit AI as a tool, not a co-author argument. Everyday git/GitHub basics (commit, branch, pull request, merge, the contribution graph) are left out on purpose.

DCO

Developer Certificate of Origin. A short, standardized statement a contributor affirms — by adding a Signed-off-by line to a commit — certifying that they wrote the code or otherwise have the right to submit it under the project's open-source license. It's a lightweight, per-commit alternative to signing a full legal agreement.

CLA

ICLA

git trailer

Git's generic machinery for 'Token: value' lines (email-header style) in a blank-line-separated block at the end of a commit message; git-interpret-trailers adds or parses them, and git itself assigns them no special meaning — they're just plain, greppable metadata.

kernel credit trailers

The Linux kernel's standardized credit and review trailers — some carry a factual claim, others are pure credit:

  • Acked-by ("Acknowledged by") — a stakeholder (often the maintainer of an affected subsystem) who didn't necessarily review the patch in detail signals they're content for it to be applied — typically when it's merged through a different tree.
  • Reviewed-by ("Reviewed by") — a reviewer who examined the patch vouches for it under the kernel's formal Reviewer's statement of oversight (an appropriate change "without any obvious bugs"). A stronger technical endorsement than Acked-by.
  • Tested-by ("Tested by") — the named person applied the patch and confirmed it works, or has the claimed effect, in some environment.
  • Reported-by ("Reported by") — credits whoever found and reported the bug the patch fixes (ask permission first if the report was private). Pure credit, no technical claim.
  • Suggested-by ("Suggested by") — credits whoever proposed the idea or approach behind the patch.

In this report: Assisted-by is deliberately modeled on these non-authorial tags, which is why it records involvement without certifying anything the way Signed-off-by does.

DCO App

A Probot-based GitHub App that enforces the DCO by failing a pull request's status check unless every commit has a valid Signed-off-by line matching the commit author's email, blocking the PR otherwise.

In this report: it mechanically ties sign-off to an accountable human account, so there's no path for an AI to satisfy the DCO check on its own behalf.
