From b8dea172680896e4e67a90ad68cc7c2ef4636e3b Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: "Kiro (agent)" Date: Sat, 31 Oct 2026 20:11:23 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 1/3] h5i-app-pg: verified TLS to PostgreSQL (feature `tls`) `pool` and `lockdown` connect with NoTls, so a deployment could not require encrypted database connections (e.g. RDS `rds.force_ssl = 1`). With the new `tls` feature (also `h5i-app/tls`): - `pool_tls(url, max_size, &Roots)` and `lockdown_tls` connect with rustls (ring provider), verifying the certificate chain against `Roots::WebPki` or a PEM CA file (`Roots::PemFile`, e.g. the RDS bundle) and the host name (libpq's verify-full). There is no unverified mode. - sslmode is raised to `require`, so a server without TLS is refused rather than used in the clear; `sslmode=disable` in the URL is an error. - The connector is implemented in the crate on tokio-rustls, so tokio-postgres is still wrapped only by h5i-app-pg and deadpool-postgres (deny.toml A8). `pool` and `lockdown` are unchanged. Tests (`src/tls_test.rs`) against a TLS-only server (`scripts/app/pg-tls.sh`: throwaway CA, certificate for `localhost`, `hostnossl ... reject`): connections are TLSv1.3, `sslmode=prefer` is raised, an untrusted CA (UnknownIssuer) and a host not in the certificate are refused, a plain pool is refused by the server, `lockdown_tls`'s connection is verified, bad CA files and `sslmode=disable` are errors. CI starts that server before scripts/app/ci-rust-tests.sh. --- .github/workflows/app.yaml | 2 + Cargo.lock | 3 + crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml | 5 ++ crates/h5i-app-pg/src/lib.rs | 26 ++++++ crates/h5i-app-pg/src/roles.rs | 35 +++++++- crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs | 138 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_test.rs | 107 +++++++++++++++++++++++ crates/h5i-app/Cargo.toml | 2 + crates/h5i-app/README.md | 7 ++ scripts/app/pg-tls.sh | 45 ++++++++++ 10 files changed, 369 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_test.rs create mode 100755 scripts/app/pg-tls.sh diff --git a/.github/workflows/app.yaml b/.github/workflows/app.yaml index 7ba652cfa..e416d38ee 100644 --- a/.github/workflows/app.yaml +++ b/.github/workflows/app.yaml @@ -65,6 +65,8 @@ jobs: - run: cargo build -p 'h5i-app*' --all-features --all-targets --locked - run: cargo build --workspace --all-targets --locked working-directory: examples/app + # A TLS-only PostgreSQL for h5i-app-pg's `tls` tests. + - run: scripts/app/pg-tls.sh "$RUNNER_TEMP/pg-tls" >> "$GITHUB_ENV" - run: scripts/app/ci-rust-tests.sh # Routes take an Actor; no client-set identity in a Command. - run: cargo app lint --all crates examples/app diff --git a/Cargo.lock b/Cargo.lock index 2b1714dce..11d072716 100644 --- a/Cargo.lock +++ b/Cargo.lock @@ -1220,9 +1220,12 @@ dependencies = [ "h5i-app-core", "h5i-app-pgsql", "h5i-app-sql", + "rustls", "tokio", "tokio-postgres", + "tokio-rustls", "tracing", + "webpki-roots 1.0.7", ] [[package]] diff --git a/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml b/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml index 75bc21265..4aed46c7d 100644 --- a/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml +++ b/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml @@ -11,6 +11,8 @@ readme = "../h5i-app/README.md" [features] # Test-only hooks (Tx::backend_pid). testing = [] +# `pool_tls` / `lockdown_tls`: TLS with rustls, server certificate verified. +tls = ["dep:rustls", "dep:tokio-rustls", "dep:webpki-roots"] [dependencies] h5i-app-core.workspace = true @@ -22,3 +24,6 @@ bytes = "1" tracing = "0.1" h5i-app-sql.workspace = true h5i-app-pgsql.workspace = true +rustls = { version = "0.23", default-features = false, features = ["ring", "std", "tls12", "logging"], optional = true } +tokio-rustls = { version = "0.26", default-features = false, features = ["ring", "tls12", "logging"], optional = true } +webpki-roots = { version = "1.0", optional = true } diff --git a/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/lib.rs b/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/lib.rs index c01b78b8f..feff17110 100644 --- a/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/lib.rs +++ b/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/lib.rs @@ -29,10 +29,16 @@ pub mod outbox; mod roles; mod statements; mod table; +#[cfg(feature = "tls")] +pub mod tls; #[cfg(test)] mod reads_test; +#[cfg(all(test, feature = "tls"))] +mod tls_test; pub use roles::{lockdown, lockdown_sql}; +#[cfg(feature = "tls")] +pub use roles::lockdown_tls; pub use table::{column_of, count_read, create_index, create_tables, load_read, load_reads, load_table, load_tables, spec, store_writes, ColumnDef, Kind, PgField, Table, Value}; pub use h5i_app_core::Timestamp; pub use h5i_app_sql as sql; @@ -354,6 +360,8 @@ pub fn with_schema(url: &str, schema: &str) -> Result { Ok(format!("{url}{sep}options=-c%20search_path%3D{schema}")) } +/// A pool of plain TCP connections. For RSA-PSS, Ed25519 and anything else it offers none: plain SCRAM-SHA-256, and `channel_binding=require` fails. Documented in the module and README. - CA files: certificates webpki cannot use as trust anchors are logged with a warning (count and file); a file with none usable is still an error. A provider's bundle with one odd entry keeps working. - Tests: - `channel_binding=require` against the server (which checks the hash itself); without the binding data, or with the wrong hash, it fails. - A server limited to TLS 1.2 (`scripts/app/pg-tls.sh` now starts it as well), with channel binding. - `pool_tls` against a server without TLS: "server does not support TLS". - A bundle with one unusable certificate still verifies; a bundle of only unusable certificates is refused. - `server_end_point` on RSA/ECDSA × SHA-1/256/384/512, Ed25519 and RSA-PSS certificates (fixtures, expected hashes from openssl). --- Cargo.lock | 1 + crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml | 3 +- crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs | 71 ++++++++++- .../src/tls_fixtures/ecdsa-sha256.pem | 11 ++ .../src/tls_fixtures/ecdsa-sha384.pem | 12 ++ .../src/tls_fixtures/ecdsa-sha512.pem | 12 ++ .../h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/ed25519.pem | 9 ++ .../h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-pss.pem | 21 ++++ .../h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha1.pem | 19 +++ .../src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha256.pem | 19 +++ .../src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha384.pem | 19 +++ .../src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha512.pem | 19 +++ crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_test.rs | 114 ++++++++++++++++-- crates/h5i-app/README.md | 4 +- scripts/app/pg-tls.sh | 43 ++++--- 15 files changed, 349 insertions(+), 28 deletions(-) create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/ecdsa-sha256.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/ecdsa-sha384.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/ecdsa-sha512.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/ed25519.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-pss.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha1.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha256.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha384.pem create mode 100644 crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls_fixtures/rsa-sha512.pem diff --git a/Cargo.lock b/Cargo.lock index 11d072716..0b7754f47 100644 --- a/Cargo.lock +++ b/Cargo.lock @@ -1220,6 +1220,7 @@ dependencies = [ "h5i-app-core", "h5i-app-pgsql", "h5i-app-sql", + "ring", "rustls", "tokio", "tokio-postgres", diff --git a/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml b/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml index 4aed46c7d..0210c0098 100644 --- a/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml +++ b/crates/h5i-app-pg/Cargo.toml @@ -12,7 +12,7 @@ readme = "../h5i-app/README.md" # Test-only hooks (Tx::backend_pid). testing = [] # `pool_tls` / `lockdown_tls`: TLS with rustls, server certificate verified. -tls = ["dep:rustls", "dep:tokio-rustls", "dep:webpki-roots"] +tls = ["dep:rustls", "dep:tokio-rustls", "dep:webpki-roots", "dep:ring"] [dependencies] h5i-app-core.workspace = true @@ -27,3 +27,4 @@ h5i-app-pgsql.workspace = true rustls = { version = "0.23", default-features = false, features = ["ring", "std", "tls12", "logging"], optional = true } tokio-rustls = { version = "0.26", default-features = false, features = ["ring", "tls12", "logging"], optional = true } webpki-roots = { version = "1.0", optional = true } +ring = { version = "0.17", optional = true } diff --git a/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs b/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs index 704806584..2be5b2764 100644 --- a/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs +++ b/crates/h5i-app-pg/src/tls.rs @@ -4,7 +4,14 @@ //! connect with `sslmode=require` and a connector that verifies the server's //! certificate chain against [`Roots`] and its name against the URL's host //!
