Selecting multiblock text precisely

I found out that it is not possible to select text that spans over multiple blocks without selecting the whole blocks..

Steps to reproduce:

1. go to https://codepen.io/kili123/pen/MWzOQNM
2. select the text between the arrows ---> [text to select] <---
3. it selects all affected blocks but not only the chars between the arrows

Expected behavior: It should only select the chars between the array like selecting normal text in browsers...

It is essential for a text editor to have the ability to select specific characters. However, I'm not sure if this is a mechanism of editor.js or a bug. From a user's perspective, it is definitely a necessary feature.

Are you guys ever planning on getting multiblock select done? My editor has AI writing and I need to be able to get the text selected when you do a multiblock select, but theres nothing in the API for getting it and it doesnt obey the actual window selection api. There should at the very least be an api method to get the current selection as text or a list of blocks at least.

If someone wants to do this we can pay a $200 bounty

Hi @rondorkerin and @neSpecc — I’m interested in taking this on, but I’d like to confirm ownership and acceptance criteria before writing a potentially overlapping implementation.

Could you please confirm:

1. Is the previously offered $200 bounty still active and funded? If so, what payment method would be used?
2. Is the maintainer’s paused implementation still planned, or is a new external PR welcome?
3. Would the intended behavior be to preserve the browser’s native Selection/Range for precise partial text selection across blocks, rather than converting that range into whole-block selection?

My proposed scope would be:

• precise forward and backward selections spanning multiple blocks;
• partial selection in the first and last blocks;
• preservation of native selected text while keeping Editor.js block operations stable;
• focused Cypress tests for selection and replacement behavior;
• coordination with the currently open block-selection fixes (Fix issues with selected blocks #3006 and fix: prevent duplicate character when typing on selected blocks (Fixes #3012) #3016) to avoid conflicting behavior.

I’ll wait for confirmation before starting implementation.
