Build error: cannot find symbol import androidx.annotation.Nullable;

I just installed this plugin and trying to build my app with Android and I'm getting the following build error:

/app/node_modules/@capacitor-community/google-maps/android/src/main/java/com/hemangkumar/capacitorgooglemaps/MapPreferencesAppearance.java:3: error: cannot find symbol
import androidx.annotation.Nullable;
                          ^
  symbol:   class Nullable
  location: package androidx.annotation

My Capacitor dependencies are all at ^6.0.0.

@capacitor-communtiy/google-maps is on ^2.0.0-beta.1. (and I'm really confused about the version numbering here: all beta and the @latest is not the highest number? So which one should I actually use?)

Things I tried to fix it:

• deleted node_modules and re-installed all dependencies
• npx cap sync
• clean and re-build Android project

I did not find any specifc information about this error wrt this plugin and I'm not too used with Android, so I'd appreciate your help with how to fix it.

Okay, the obvious fix was to install the ACTUAL latest version beta.8. But why is the ancient beta.1 still tagged as @latest?
