before I try to implement it, will it work with mpr
on a Linux machine? I see the words bash and zsh, does
that mean mpremote uses one of these?

What do you mean "before I implement it"? What do you want to do? Where do you see the words bash and zsh?

You can use argcomplete with mpr merely to complete on sub-commands and options but since mpr offers short aliases it is not a great advantage. Just use a sub-command alias to shorten your typing.

Before I go through the effort of trying to use tab auto-complete, like in rshell.

It makes two assumptions:

You're using bash or zsh as your shell
