Description

@chrisglein

As we're discussing sharing this website with a new audience, it's a natural time to tidy up some UX/usability issues. Specifically, for those looking for a songbook+ experience (lyrics, chords, melody) and don't need all the bells and whistles.

Let's take a look at how it is today:

Image

For the songbook+ audience, entering ABC isn't a necessary scenario. They just want to pick a song. Also, discovering the drop down song selector in the mix of that isn't obvious.

Recommended changes for "lean" mode:

  • No multiline text input box for ABC
  • No errors indicator e.g. "No errors"
  • No commit hash link
  • No link to GitHub
  • No link to ABC notation (since it isn't shown)

Keep (but with better tighter graphic design)

  • Lyrics toggle (currently checkbox)
  • Guitar tab toggle (currently checkbox)
  • Trumpet fingering toggle (currently checkbox)
  • Transpose option (currently numeric offset to apply)
    • It'd be better if this was a drop down showing the current key and allowing explicit selection of the destination key with numeric offset shown
  • All of the above should be tight and unobtrusive so most screen real estate is dedicated to the music. Use tight graphic design, iconography, etc.
