From 8ae199036a6e9ef0af1e3dea542bd77b031a1d9c Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: JJ Eaton <58495321+jayleaton@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Thu, 29 Oct 2026 18:05:46 +0700 Subject: [PATCH 1/2] Issue forms and a sharper pull request template The pull request template asks for the issue link, the atc overlap result, the lean checker's base and head counts and the paths and platforms reached. Its receipt and inference checklist now say "n/a" for changes that cannot reach inference, the kernel contract is a section only kernel changes fill, and new weights or drafters state their licence. Issue forms for bugs, performance regressions, feature requests and the issue-first proposal for a model family, backend or arithmetic change ask for the version or commit, the checkpoint and revision, the hardware and the exact command. Blank issues are off; contact links point to CONTRIBUTING, the agent radar, the known issues and the runbook. --- .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug.yml | 136 ++++++++++++++++++++++++ .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/config.yml | 14 +++ .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/feature.yml | 71 +++++++++++++ .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/performance.yml | 138 +++++++++++++++++++++++++ .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/proposal.yml | 123 ++++++++++++++++++++++ .github/pull_request_template.md | 44 ++++++-- 6 files changed, 516 insertions(+), 10 deletions(-) create mode 100644 .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug.yml create mode 100644 .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/config.yml create mode 100644 .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/feature.yml create mode 100644 .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/performance.yml create mode 100644 .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/proposal.yml diff --git a/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug.yml b/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug.yml new file mode 100644 index 0000000000..91a48c32b1 --- /dev/null +++ b/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug.yml @@ -0,0 +1,136 @@ +name: Bug report +description: Something TensorFold does wrong, such as a crash, hang, refusal, token mismatch or API error. +labels: ["bug"] +body: + - type: markdown + attributes: + value: | + Thanks for the report. Scope, issue and coordination + +- Keep one behavior per pull request. Name it in one sentence; if you need "and", split. +- Split an independent layer into its own pull request and stack the rest on it as drafts, for example the loader first with the new model stacked on it. +- Do not count files inherited from a parent pull request as new scope; state the parent and your own commit range. +- Write `Fixes #N` only when this pull request completes the issue. Use `Refs #N` for partial or stacked work and say what remains. +- With no issue, say why. A new model family, backend or arithmetic change needs an issue and an agreed gate first; a proposed gate is not an agreed one. +- Check the issue with `atc check ISSUE --json` and claim it only when the advice is `free`. Do not open a competing implementation when `duplicateAttempts` lists one. +- Run `atc overlap --json` last, after the final rebase. Resolve every `"conflicts"` entry and put the result, its time and its base in the description. +- Never paste ATC session secrets or board details that identify people. + +## 2. Base and head + +- Rebase on current `main` (or the parent branch for a stack) and push before collecting evidence. +- Record the base and head SHAs that every receipt line was measured on. +- After any push, re-read the actual head and refresh the title, description, receipt and stack notes. Remove claims about code you dropped. +- For review fixes, map each request to its change and the check that proves it; a commit titled "address review" proves nothing. + +## 3. Fill the template + +Open [the pull request template](../../.github/pull_request_template.md) and fill every line on the head you pushed. +Delete only the sections the template says to delete; write "n/a" and the reason on any other line that does not apply. +Never leave a line blank or claim a check you did not run. + +- **What this changes:** the behavior before and after. Fill Issue, Stacked on and `atc overlap --json` from step 1, and the stack's commits from step 2. +- **Checks on this head:** the head SHA from step 2, the lean base and head counts and every test command from step 5, and CI classified as in step 5. +- **Receipt:** fill it for a change that reaches inference. For one that cannot (docs, CI, clients, the app), write "n/a" and why, and put its link checks or host checks under Checks on this head. + - Environment: base and head SHAs, Zig from `.zig-version`, backend toolchain, GPU, OS, RAM class and the checkpoint's immutable revision; add the drafter's when drafts run. + - Paths and platforms: the default path and every other caller of the changed code, and the platforms from step 4. + - Exactness: token-for-token equality at the same checkpoint and settings, not "the answers are correct". Cover each contract the change reaches for every admitted stream count: + + ```sh + python3 tools/bench_concurrent.py http://127.0.0.1:8080 local-model \ + --tokens 256 --reps 3 --temperatures 0 --levels 1,4 --alone --serial --output concurrent.json + ``` + + - Decode: before and after on the same machine, checkpoint, public prompts and settings; alternate runs when the difference is a few percent: + + ```sh + python3 tools/bench_openai.py http://127.0.0.1:8080 local-model \ + --tokens 256 --reps 3 --temperatures 0 --label candidate --output decode.json + ``` + + - Prompt speed: cold, with `--prompt-cache-gib 0` and fresh KV, at 2k, 8k, 32k and 64k where admitted. A faster new path does not excuse a slower default. + - Attach raw results and commit the comparison tool; a table nobody can rerun is not a receipt. +- **Kernel contract:** fill it from step 4 when a GPU kernel is new or changed; otherwise delete it, as the template says. +- **Checklist:** tick a line only when step 7 confirms it on this head. Skip the inference-only block when the Receipt is "n/a". + +## 4. Kernels, arithmetic and platforms + +- A new or changed GPU kernel registers with the [kernel contract](../kernel-contract.md#adding-a-kernel): its test type, the runner list with served shapes and tiles, `registry.zig` launches and records (`hip_records.zig` for HIP). +- Cover every dispatch variant and served width the change reaches, not one convenient shape. A replacement kernel names the kernel it replaces. +- Paste each backend's complete `SUMMARY` line and exit status. Launch records alone are not the contract. +- Metal: `zig build kernel-contract -Dcpu=apple_m1`. +- CUDA: `zig build kernel-contract -Dnvcc=PATH`; for the served SMs' limits, `zig build fatbins kernel-contract-fatbins -Dnvcc=PATH -Dsm=LIST`, then `tf-cuda-test kernel-contract-limits zig-out/fatbin`. +- HIP: `zig build hip-kernel-contract -Dhip-arch=ARCH -Dhipcc=PATH` on that chip, and `zig build hip-kernel-contract-limits -Dhipcc=PATH` for every served chip. +- A changed reduction order or precision needs an independent FP64 reference for each affected projection class; report worst per-column differences, not only the average. +- For model fidelity, use teacher-forced histories and list every top-token difference with both margins. +- Keep same-engine equality separate from independent fidelity. An FP64 receipt does not waive a bit-identity gate. +- Do not loosen a tolerance, add a known exemption or change a tie policy after seeing results. +- Keep the checkpoint's published precision; an opt-in lossy weight or cache conversion still needs an agreed gate. +- State which platforms you ran and which you could not: Metal by chip (M1 to M5), CUDA by SM, HIP by gfx target, Windows, desktop or mobile app. A result on one chip does not qualify another; unrun is not passed. + +## 5. Tests and checks + +- Show each new test failing before the change and passing after it. Confirm the test is reached by the build step you ran. +- A failing comparison must exit nonzero, not print a warning. Add a negative control where a test could pass vacuously, and bound any process that can hang. +- Tests skip cleanly when their dependency is absent. +- Run the host suite (see CONTRIBUTING for platform flags; `test-cuda-host` is a subset, not a substitute): + + ```sh + zig build test test-golden + zig build dev-tools # macOS, after changing an API the tf-* tools call + zig fmt --check build.zig zig + git diff --check + ``` + +- Run the lean checker on base and head with the same checker, as CI does, and report both counts and zero new findings: + + ```sh + git worktree add --detach ../lean-base "$(git merge-base HEAD origin/main)" + cp tools/zig/lean_check.py ../lean-base/tools/zig/lean_check.py + (cd ../lean-base && python3 tools/zig/lean_check.py > ../lean-base.txt || true) + python3 tools/zig/lean_check.py > ../lean-head.txt || true + python3 tools/zig/lean_new.py ../lean-base.txt ../lean-head.txt + git worktree remove ../lean-base + ``` + + A nonzero inherited count is not a clean exit; name it as inherited. +- Run the scoped checks for what you touched: `.github/workflows/` lists the app (`npm test`, `npm run typecheck`, `npm run verify:mobile`) and pack-compare jobs. +- Read the current head's CI. Fix failures you introduced; label the rest inherited, flaky or infrastructure with a link. + +## 6. Source and publication hygiene + +- Comments and docstrings are one line of at most 120 columns. Files stay at or below 600 lines. +- Measurements, debugging history and fork history belong in the receipt or a recipe, not in source, tests or fixtures. +- Add a setting only with a production caller and a measured benefit; never turn drafts off on an advertised path. +- Extend the existing shared cache, scheduler or operator; explain why it cannot be extended before adding a second one. +- Keep private emails, machine names, internal hosts, local user paths, keys and confidential prompts out of source, fixtures, receipts and commit messages. Use fictional identities and reserved documentation addresses in examples. +- Kill only the processes a script started, keep normal SSH host verification, and pin and inspect external reference code before running it. +- Check author and committer of every outgoing commit with `git log --format='%an %ae | %cn %ce' origin/main..HEAD`. Use your approved public identity and GitHub noreply address. +- Keep every contributor's authorship. Add no AI co-author trailers or "Generated with" lines to commits or the description. + +## 7. Final self-check + +Before `gh pr create`, or before marking a draft ready, confirm these on the head you pushed, then tick the template's checklist: + +- [ ] One behavior; split layers stacked; Issue, Stacked on and the overlap result filled. +- [ ] `atc overlap --json` run after the last rebase; every conflict resolved or shown to be inherited. +- [ ] Head commit, both lean counts and zero new findings; `zig fmt --check` and `git diff --check` pass. +- [ ] CI on this head green, or each failure classified. +- [ ] Each line filled or "n/a" with a reason; only the sections the template says to delete are gone. +- [ ] Platforms named by chip or target, run and not run. +- [ ] Author and committer of every outgoing commit are your public identity.
