A production-grade MVU (Model-View-Update) architecture has been implemented with comprehensive parameter validation and self-test capabilities.
File: src/domain/topicSpec.ts (NEW - 210 lines)
- TopicId type with all 10 algorithms
- TopicSpec interface with parameter validation rules
- ParamSpec defines required/optional params with types
- Comprehensive specs for:
- minimum, selectionsort, insertionsort, bubblesort
- binarysearch, search_contains, count_condition
- minmax_avg, maxperiod, checksum
- getDefaultParams(topic, mode): Returns valid params for any topic
- validateParams(topic, params): Returns array of human-readable validation errors
- Special handling for topics requiring "target" param (binarysearch, search_contains)
- Note: selectionsort uses "array" instead of "arr" per Python core
File: src/state/model.ts
- Uses TopicId and ModeId from topicSpec (type-safe)
- Added paramsValid: boolean (JSON syntax valid)
- Added paramsErrors: string[] (topic-specific validation errors)
- Added requestPreviewOpen: boolean (accordion state)
- Updated initialModel() to use getDefaultParams()
- All fields properly typed
File: src/state/actions.ts
- Actions now use TopicId and ModeId types
- Added PracticeRequestPreviewToggle: Toggle request JSON preview
- Added PracticeCopyRequest: Copy request JSON to clipboard
- Added PracticeCopyResult: Copy result JSON to clipboard
- Added PracticeSelfTest: Run 3 automated tests
- All actions type-safe with discriminated unions
File: src/state/update.ts
- PracticeTopicChanged: Auto-fills default params, validates
- PracticeModeChanged: Auto-fills default params, validates
- PracticeParamsChanged:
- Validates JSON syntax first
- Then validates topic-specific rules
- Sets paramsValid and paramsErrors
- PracticeRunRequested:
- Validates params before executing
- Shows validation errors if invalid
- Does NOT call core if params invalid
- PracticeRequestPreviewToggle: Toggles accordion
- PracticeCopyRequest: Copies to clipboard, logs action
- PracticeCopyResult: Copies raw JSON to clipboard
- PracticeSelfTest: Triggers self-test command
- Pure function - no side effects
File: src/state/commands.ts
- Added SelfTest command type
- Commands: none, RunTutor, Ping, SelfTest
File: src/app/runtime.ts
- Added SelfTest handler:
- Runs 3 predefined requests:
- BubbleSort pseudocode
- BinarySearch pseudocode (with target)
- SearchContains trace_exam (with target)
- Reports pass/fail for each
- Logs summary (e.g., "3 passed, 0 failed")
- Runs 3 predefined requests:
- All async operations handled gracefully
- Errors logged and dispatched
File: src/views/PracticePage.tsx (REPLACED old PracticeView.tsx)
- Topic/Mode/Language selects with proper typing
- Topic Description shows spec description
- Params Editor with JSON validation
- Validation Errors shown in red box below params
- Request Preview accordion (collapsed by default):
- Shows exact JSON that will be sent
- Helps debugging
- Action Buttons:
▶️ Run (disabled if params invalid or running)- 📋 Copy Request (copies request JSON)
- 📋 Copy Result (copies response JSON, shown after success)
- 🧪 Self Test (runs 3 automated tests)
- Status badge (idle/running/success/error)
- Error Panel shows validation/runtime errors with details
- Tabs (Result, Events, Questions, Stats, Raw, Logs)
- Each tab wrapped in ErrorBoundary
- Uses specialized renderers from renderers.tsx
- Loading state during execution
- Empty state before first run
- No black screens: ErrorBoundary catches all render errors
- Inline styles (can be extracted to CSS later if needed)
File: src/components/renderers.tsx (unchanged)
- ResultRenderer: Pseudocode/explain with copy button
- EventsRenderer: Event navigation with messages
- QuestionsRenderer: Cards with answer toggle
- StatsRenderer: Grid layout
- RawJsonRenderer: Pretty JSON with copy
- LogsRenderer: Indexed log entries
File: src/components/ErrorBoundary.tsx (unchanged)
- Catches React errors
- Shows error UI with stack trace
- Prevents black screens
Files: src/api/coreClient.ts (unchanged)
- runTutorRaw(): Calls Tauri run_tutor command
- ping(): Tests connectivity
File: src-tauri/src/lib.rs (already robust)
- Reads FIAE_TUTOR_CORE_DIR env var
- Defaults to C:\Projects\fiae-workspace\fiae-tutor-core
- Validates Python executable
- Spawns Python with timeout (10 seconds)
- Captures stdout/stderr
- Returns structured errors on failure
- Already handles non-zero exit codes
- Single source of truth: AppModel contains all state
- Pure update function: No side effects in update()
- Commands layer: Async operations (RunTutor, Ping, SelfTest)
- useReducer: React hook for MVU pattern
- Type-safe actions: Discriminated union types
- No scattered setState: All state changes through update()
- TopicSpec for each of 10 algorithms
- Required/Optional params clearly defined
- Type validation: number, number[], string, boolean
- Default params: Auto-fill on topic/mode change
- Validation before run: No invalid requests sent to core
- Human-readable errors: "Missing required parameter: target"
- Special cases handled:
- search_contains requires: case, arr, target
- binarysearch requires: arr, target
- minimum requires: arr, start
- checksum requires: case, code/weights/digits
- Result tab: Renders pseudocode/explain properly (not raw JSON)
- Events tab: Table with navigation (First/Prev/Next/Last)
- Questions tab: Cards with "show answer" toggle
- Stats tab: Key/value grid
- Raw tab: Pretty-printed full JSON
- Logs tab: Timestamped debug logs
- Request Preview: Accordion showing exact JSON to be sent
- Copy buttons: Copy request or result to clipboard
- ErrorBoundary: No black screens - shows error UI with stack
- Validation feedback: Clear errors shown before run
- Tauri command already uses FIAE_TUTOR_CORE_DIR
- Default path: C:\Projects\fiae-workspace\fiae-tutor-core
- Timeout: 10 seconds for Python execution
- stderr captured: Always shown on error
- Structured errors: Non-zero exit codes return detailed error strings
- Path validation: Checks core directory exists before execution
- PracticeSelfTest action: Triggers automated testing
- 3 Test cases:
- bubblesort/pseudocode with arr: [5,2,8,1]
- binarysearch/pseudocode with arr: [1,3,5,7,9], target: 5
- search_contains/trace_exam with case:"contains", arr: [1,3,5,7,9], target: 7
- Pass/Fail reporting: Logs each test result
- Summary: "3 passed, 0 failed" or similar
- Logs visible in Logs tab
cd c:/Projects/fiae-workspace/fiae-tutor-desktop
npm run tauri dev- Select search_contains
- Default params should auto-fill with target
- Delete the
"target": 7line - ❌ Should show error: "Missing required parameter: target"
- Run button should be disabled
- Re-add
"target": 7 - ✅ Error clears, Run button enabled
Test that each topic runs successfully with default params:
- minimum: arr + start → Should show minimum value
- selectionsort: array → Should show sorted array
- insertionsort: arr → Should show sorted array
- bubblesort: arr → Should show sorted array
- binarysearch: arr + target → Should show search result
- search_contains: case + arr + target → Should show contains result
- count_condition: arr + threshold + case → Should show count
- minmax_avg: arr → Should show min/max/avg
- maxperiod: arr → Should show longest sequence of 1s
- checksum: case + code + weights → Should show checksum
- Run bubblesort pseudocode
- Switch to Result tab → Should show pseudocode formatted
- Switch to Events tab → Should show events table
- Switch to Stats tab → Should show statistics
- Switch to Raw tab → Should show pretty JSON
- Switch to Logs tab → Should show execution logs
- No blank screens should occur

- Edit params to invalid JSON:
{bad json - Should show: "JSON syntax error: ..."
- Fix JSON but make it invalid for topic:
{"wrong": "params"} - Should show validation errors
- Run button should be disabled
- MVU Architecture: Pure update(), side effects in commands
- TopicSpec System: All 10 topics with validation
- Validation Before Run: Invalid params blocked
