if one has a a mesh of a compound of volumes and a group for one of the volumes but not for the other ones. file/export/gmsh (at least in ascii 2.2) will NOT export all the volume elements of the mesh.
For the looks of my tests it will actually export all the volume elements that are NOT part of the volumetric groups created by the user.
see the attached image, on the right, a clip of the salome mesh + showing the volumetric group created by the user, on the right, the clip of the mesh opened by paraview 6.0.1. Notice the axis on each program, the elements that are not exported are the ones corresponding to the volumetric group.
here is a dummy example to test it.
