Implement a foundational suite of unit tests for the core logic.

Problem it solves

As the project scales and new features are added, the lack of automated tests makes it extremely difficult to prevent regressions and catch bugs early in the development cycle.

Proposed solution

I'd like to help set up the initial testing framework and write some foundational tests. This will give contributors the confidence to make changes safely. Could you assign this issue to me and tag it with ELUSOC?
