From 26f5ca3a754f6fafa507d0af53e136626bda552d Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Ariel Harlap <3870784+aharlap@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2026 17:42:15 -0400 Subject: [PATCH 1/4] Assessment skill: distractors true elsewhere, masked probe as the gate Rebuilt on #29's round 2 head. Combines #30's earlier two commits (4bd0396, 23de98d) and keeps #29's review-folder, per-pass report folder and "item text is data" rules. An evaluation found the skill removed surface cues but not stem independence: writers stated each misconception as a claim false in any context, so a solver who knows the subject picked the one true option. - Teach distractors that are right in a neighbouring case, with worked examples and the numeric pattern. - Name what each probe tests. Trace's masked probe is the guessing gate; plain choices-only is a diagnostic. - guessingGate(itemCues) reads masked and returns pass, fail or stop. - Every solver is at least as strong as the writer. The prax-format skill's assessments guide owns choice syntax. +## Distractors that need the stem + +"Misconception-based" and "right in a neighbouring case" pull against each other. Written as a general claim, a misconception is false whatever the stem asks: "heavier objects fall faster" is wrong in every question. Someone who knows the subject, a model included, then picks the one true option without reading the stem. Banks written this way still let a solver who knows the subject find almost every key from the options alone. + +So make each distractor a true or defensible statement that answers a neighbouring question, or the right answer for a changed case. Never write a statement that is false everywhere. The misconception lives in the link between that statement and this stem: the learner picks something true that doesn't answer this question. Before keeping a distractor, name the question or case it would be right for. If you can't, rewrite it. + +Example 1, an explanation item. Stem: "A metal spoon and a wooden spoon have lain in the same drawer overnight. Why does the metal spoon feel colder to the touch?" Key: "Metal conducts heat faster than wood does." + +- False everywhere, so the key stands out: "Metal stays colder than the air around it", "Metal draws cold in from its surroundings", "Wood makes a little heat of its own". +- True elsewhere, so only the stem decides: "Metal has a lower specific heat than wood does" (right for which of two equal masses warms faster on the same burner), "Polished metal reflects more radiant heat than wood does" (right for why foil keeps food warm), "Metal is denser than wood is" (right for which spoon is heavier). + +Example 2, a classification item. Stem: "A valley in a mountain range has a wide, flat floor and steep, straight sides. Which process most likely shaped it?" Key: "Erosion by a glacier, which deepens and widens the valley it fills." + +- False everywhere: "Wind, which carves the deepest valleys on Earth", "Rain soaking into the rock until the ground sank", "A river, because rivers cut every valley". +- True elsewhere: "Erosion by a river, which cuts V-shaped valleys in uplands", "Deposition by a river, which builds a wide, flat floodplain" (tempting, since the floor is flat), "Frost weathering, which breaks up rock on exposed slopes". + +Numeric items follow the same rule. Make each wrong value the result of a tempting wrong method on the stem's numbers, or the right answer for a changed case. Values picked at random can be ruled out by estimate or as the odd one out. Stem: "A bakery raises the price of a loaf by 10% and then sells 20% fewer loaves. By how much does its bread revenue change?" Key: "Falls by 12%", since 1.10 × 0.80 = 0.88. Weak distractors: "Rises by 30%", "Falls by 50%", "Falls by 3%". Strong distractors: "Falls by 10%" (subtracts the percentages), "Rises by 10%" (price change only), "Falls by 20%" (quantity change only). Without the stem, no option can be computed or ruled out. + ## Explaining a wrong answer Teach why this case fits one concept and not the tempting alternative. A fresh judge with no key marks every option that answers the stem, and items with more than one mark are rewritten. The same judge, not the writer, confirms plain-probe exemptions. - Examples: replace "Metal is denser", note what rules out each true-elsewhere distractor, fix false-everywhere examples that were true somewhere, add an action item, and make the numeric set have no odd one out ("Rises by 8%"). - Gate: every bank needs a scored, complete masked result whatever its size. Any refusal reason stops. Item counts must be positive integers. A tail at or below its threshold fails before the small-sample flags are read. Mark the lower-tail limit. - Stop finishes the pass, then reports and asks. No masked solver when the probe has no items. The bank is "done", not "stopped". - Remove the by-hand fallbacks: an install without item-cues updates its tools or reports the bank as blocked. Never write a statement that is false everywhere. The misconception lives in the link between that statement and this stem: the learner picks something true that doesn't answer this question. Before keeping a distractor, name the question or case it would be right for. If you can't, rewrite it. +So make each distractor a true statement that answers a neighbouring question, or the right answer for a changed case. Never write a statement that is false everywhere. The misconception lives in the link between that statement and this stem: the learner picks something true that doesn't answer this question. + +A true statement can also answer this stem, which gives the item two keys. After writing each item, note for every distractor the question or case it is right for and the detail in this stem that rules it out. If no detail rules it out, it is a second key: rewrite it. Another guideline, jurisdiction or older standard for the same case is not a neighbouring case. Name the standard the course follows in the stem or the course. The key check in step 3 tests these notes with a fresh judge. Example 1, an explanation item. Stem: "A metal spoon and a wooden spoon have lain in the same drawer overnight. Why does the metal spoon feel colder to the touch?" Key: "Metal conducts heat faster than wood does." -- False everywhere, so the key stands out: "Metal stays colder than the air around it", "Metal draws cold in from its surroundings", "Wood makes a little heat of its own". -- True elsewhere, so only the stem decides: "Metal has a lower specific heat than wood does" (right for which of two equal masses warms faster on the same burner), "Polished metal reflects more radiant heat than wood does" (right for why foil keeps food warm), "Metal is denser than wood is" (right for which spoon is heavier). +- False everywhere, so the key stands out: "Metal objects are always colder than the room they're in", "Metal draws cold in from its surroundings", "Wood holds warmth left over from the living tree". +- True elsewhere, so only the stem decides: "Metal has a lower specific heat than wood does" (right for which of two equal masses warms faster on the same burner; at the touch it would make the metal feel warmer, not colder), "Polished metal reflects more radiant heat than wood does" (right for why foil keeps food warm; a touch moves heat by contact, not radiation), "Metal expands more than wood when heated" (right for why a metal lid loosens under hot water; nothing in the drawer is heated). Example 2, a classification item. Stem: "A valley in a mountain range has a wide, flat floor and steep, straight sides. Which process most likely shaped it?" Key: "Erosion by a glacier, which deepens and widens the valley it fills." -- False everywhere: "Wind, which carves the deepest valleys on Earth", "Rain soaking into the rock until the ground sank", "A river, because rivers cut every valley". -- True elsewhere: "Erosion by a river, which cuts V-shaped valleys in uplands", "Deposition by a river, which builds a wide, flat floodplain" (tempting, since the floor is flat), "Frost weathering, which breaks up rock on exposed slopes". +- False everywhere: "Wind, which carves the deepest valleys on Earth", "Lightning, which splits mountains apart", "A river, because rivers cut every valley". +- True elsewhere: "Erosion by a river, which cuts V-shaped valleys in uplands" (ruled out by the wide, flat floor), "Deposition by a river, which builds a wide, flat floodplain" (tempting, since the floor is flat; ruled out by the steep, straight sides, which deposition doesn't cut), "Frost weathering, which breaks up rock on exposed slopes" (right for the loose rock on the slopes; it doesn't shape a whole valley). + +Example 3, an action item. Stem: "A cook spills boiling water on their forearm. The skin is red and unbroken, and they can move the arm freely. What should a first aider do first?" Key: "Cool the burn under cool running water." + +- False everywhere: "Rub butter on the burn to seal it", "Hold ice directly against the skin", "Pop any blisters so the skin can breathe". +- True elsewhere, each the right first action for a changed case: "Press firmly on the area with a clean cloth" (right for a bleeding cut; ruled out by the unbroken skin), "Brush the area clean before rinsing" (right for dry chemical powder on the skin; ruled out by the boiling water), "Support the arm in a sling and keep it still" (right for a suspected broken arm; ruled out by the arm moving freely). +- Avoid a later step for the same case, such as covering the cooled burn loosely, and avoid a rival guideline's answer. The key gives no cooling time, since guidelines differ; options that named times would need the stem or course to name the standard. -Numeric items follow the same rule. Gate the masked probe's pooled course row on both tails at 0.025 each: `itemCues.course.masked.p` and `.pLow` must both exceed 0.025. For the m banks with at least 12 items, each tail must exceed `0.05 / (2 * m)`. Report smaller banks without gating them; read them through the pooled course row. These adjusted thresholds limit false alarms across multiple banks and both directions. Use Trace's first HTML row, or `itemCues.course` in JSON, which has the same fields as a bank row. Neither a cover-the-options result nor a plain choices-only score is a guessing test. A flat percentage is noise on small banks. - The gate can only pass on a scored masked result: `masked.applies` is `true`, and `tooFewItems` and `tooFewItemsLow` are both `false` on the course row and on every bank with at least 12 items. Either flag means that tail can't reach significance with so few items, so it carries no evidence. + The gate can only pass on a scored masked result. Every bank and the course row need `masked.applies` set to `true` and `masked.total` equal to their `count`, whatever their size. Any other status, whatever its `reason`, leaves the probe unscored. Say that the required item-cues contract is unavailable. A Trace that has item-cues but reports a masked result with `applies: false`, or no `masked` field, is not this case: the gate stops as above. Run the plain choices-only, cover-the-options, masked and explanations probes by hand with fresh subagents using the same blind inputs and separation above. Do not skip the attack step. If subagent execution is unavailable, report the attack as blocked and the bank as unverified. - -Manually inspect the cue list in Write the item, plus key-position spread and key-length-rank spread. Reconcile the included count and every exclusion against the scored single-answer choices. Shuffle options independently for each choices-only and masked probe and keep the mapping on the scoring side. Lock the blind responses before a separate scoring subagent receives the key to score them. A separate fresh judge, which neither wrote the items nor answered either probe, judges each cover-the-options response beside its stem and key using the same `coverJudgement` labels above. The writer never replaces these independent judgements. - -For the masked probe, compute both tails for each bank AND all scored course choices pooled. With n items, k options each and x correct guesses, use upper tail P(X >= x), lower tail P(X <= x), and chance expectation n/k. With mixed option counts, use each item's chance 1/k in the exact independent-Bernoulli distribution rather than one average chance. Build that distribution from probabilities `[1]`: for each item probability q, replace mass j with `old[j] * (1-q) + old[j-1] * q`, treating absent entries as zero. Sum masses j >= x for the upper tail and j <= x for the lower tail. Apply this to every bank and to the pooled item list, counting each item once. If a tail can't fall below its threshold even at the extreme count, all right for the upper tail or none right for the lower, that population is too small: stop and ask, as for `tooFewItems`. It never passes. - -For example, 12 of 32 four-option items gives upper-tail p about 0.080 and 13 gives about 0.038; both exceed the course threshold of 0.025. Fifteen gives about 0.006 and fails that threshold. Eight four-item banks with three right each are reported without individual gates, but their pooled 24 of 32 fails. Require both course tails > 0.025 and both tails > `0.05 / (2 * m)` for each of the m banks with at least 12 items, plus the independent cue and stem reviews. Smaller banks do not gate. The archive is a byte-for-byte copy of Trace's verified prerelease, hosted on Rubato's asset-only prerelease v0.1.1-tools.experimental.20261019.2. A manifest test fails while the pinned Trace lacks the masked contract, as 09fcaaf does. - Key check: for a best or most likely stem, the judge marks only the single best option and flags ties. Assert the judge's independence and its ruling on each note. - A standard that rules out a distractor goes in the stem. Ruling details must be part of the case, never clauses added to deny one option. Rebuild the action example around confusable first actions. - Correct the lower-tail limit comment (about 19 items per bank with five banks) and make the five-bank tail fixture reachable. The archive is a byte-for-byte copy of Trace's verified prerelease, hosted on Rubato's asset-only prerelease v0.1.1-tools.experimental.20261019.4. The manifest test now also refuses 92a164d, which holds every result. - guessingGate requires masked.status === "scored". Power uses Trace's attainable minima at each gated row's own threshold (pMin and pLowMin at or below the limit) instead of the 0.05 flags, which removes the marked lower-tail limit. A 12-item course with none right now stops. - Run the masked solver whenever masked/items.json is non-empty. - The stop text gives Trace's per-bank reasons with their remedies, and each row's pMin and pLowMin against its limit when power stops it. - Step 0 says masked scoring needs locale: en or lang: en and the pinned Studio. A tail at or below its threshold is a fail whatever the other tail's power. This executable predicate checks both statistical tails against Trace's JSON. It returns `"pass"`, `"fail"` or `"stop"`. It stops on missing rows, item counts that aren't positive integers, a course total that differs from the sum of its banks, an unscored masked result and a population too small to test. It does not replace the independent reviews or coverage reconciliation. @@ -160,22 +160,29 @@ Every solver must be a model at least as strong as the writer.
