The need for MacOS Virtual Machines & a working Test-Kitchen setup has plagued this project from the beginning. A solution utilizing Test Kitchen, Vagrant, Libvirt, QEMU, and OSX-KVM has been proven possible as proof-of-concept. Tools were rather complicated to set up but worked from late 2021 to early 2022.

Additionally, a remote Linux host accessed over SSH was possible to launch VMs remotely on a Linux server from another macOS workstation. This seems to be the holy grail of macOS VM CI/CD testing for this project!

Proof-of-concept is still working on the Linux server host side. However, the macOS workstation tools broke due to the complicated dependencies of Vagrant, vagrant-libvirt, ruby-libvirt, and other moving parts.

For this task:

• Evaluate the current state of all dependencies for making this possible:
  • ruby-libvirt-0.8.0 or later
  • vagrant-libvirt-0.7.1.pre.27 or later
  • libvirt v8.1.0 or later
  • Subtasks in: Evaluate state of macOS VM stack dependencies #255
• Walk through reproducing the developer workstation tools installation process as of 2023-2024
  • Most of the bugfixes from above should have been released
  • Investigate and/or reach out to ruby-libvirt maintainers to get that updated gem released publicly
  • [ ] Suggest using Ownership Calls & Requests to allow OSS community members to adopt this gem project & provide continuity of maintainership N/A not needed, anymore... following tasks are done in LyraPhase/sprout-wrap macOS Monterey + M1 Apple Silicon Support #205
  • Reached out to repo maintainers in libvirt/libvirt-ruby#4 (GitLab)
  • Successful admin access for Andrea Bolognani as of 02/08/2024
  • Release of ruby-libvirt / a.k.a. ruby-libvirt v0.8.1 on February 08, 2024
  • Release of latest ruby-libvirt / a.k.a. ruby-libvirt gem v0.8.4 on August 01, 2024
  • Pinged RubyGems maintainer (@clalancette) in clalancette/myrosdistro#8
• Restore capability for remote macOS workstation to launch Vagrant MacOS VMs on the remote Linux host server
  • Test using sprout-wrap and/or lyraphase-chef projects as test use cases
